Mates' Plates Vol 562

Out July 6th on Brackles and Shortstuff's new label Blunted Robots, two tunes that have been killing it on Brackles' Rinse shows along with being played by DJs like Geiom, Oneman, Bok Bok, Untold etc. Martin Kemp's woozy wonky percussively bubbling 'No Charisma' is my percy ingle on the plate (see HERE for previous semi-slobberings). Everybody with ears and decks should buy this 12. Audio on Blunted Robots Myspace HERE.

I think I've talked about Wigflex before on here, dunno if I plugged their last EP though but I should have. The new one is equally as good, full of bleeps, clicks and chirrups but not slacking on the party-starting front either - sort of combining headspace with elbow space, the kind of tunes you could have a right knees up in a club while off so mangled on ketamine that you think your knees aren't their anymore to put up... Go HERE for more info.

Also I don't think Geiom really needs a plug from me but his new funky influenced stuff is running ('Hard Downs' especially) - go to his Myspace for clips. He's also recently done a mix for Fact magazine (''providing Corpsey with lazy blog content since 2008''), which you can find HERE (article HERE).

Anyone into their UK Funky at the moment should check DSF member Hackman's funky tunes on his Myspace. Percussively solid and rattling with big Roska-esque b-lines and a lot of nice soulful/psychadelic-funk vibes riding the drums, fucking superb stuff. One to watch.

Right, well if I don't get any blow jobs or eight-balls out of that I'll be steaming.

Futureproving difficult to make a pun out of

but fuck it. I heard this tune getting dropped at a squat-after-party after Futureproof this Saturday just gone. Even through the haze of utter wonk I could tell a tune that wasn't made for a brain-damaged, sweat-festooned puny toon, and oh how I danced. Someone also dropped this:

At the night itself, this brought the lights up:
<

I have to admit when I was dancing to this I wasn't really from the endz, but I just pretended and I don't think anyone noticed. Lil Silva absolutely merked it - when I came in he was rolling out Now That's What I Call Funky the selection, and that was absolutely fine and jilldandy, given that this isn't anywhere near as bad a prospect as a Now That's What I Call Coldplay selection or Now That's What I Call Music T-Pain Isn't Inspired By selection. It means Gabryelle RMX, Do You Mind, Sirens and that Crazy Cousinz tune with the Xylophone which sounded fucking unbelievable on the FP system.

The system was ridiculously big (I think Silva said he'd never heard Funky on such a huge rig) and interestingly it reminded me of how much better suited dubstep is to that sort of system than garage, which needs to be a little more light in my opinion. Funky came through perfectly, though, it's amazing how simple but solid a lot of those tunes are (I mean that Roska tune 'Gone to a Better Place' is essentially the same thing over and over again, but all these little details keep the momentum up). Funky makes people MOVE too - I hate that cliche of dubstep being all people shuffling around farting buds down their trouser legs and tongueing each others nostrils but there IS something more doneo-may-care about dancing to Funky. I don't know if people in Funky say things like ''This tune makes me want to rape Bono...'' yet because it doesn't seem like aggressive music, by and large. Even the grimey tunes Lil Silva makes are still quite fun and bouncy - it's that balance of aggression and party energy that a lot of 'jump up' music doesn't seem to nail to me.

On the dubstep tip I have to big up Ben UFO for playing Almighty Father RMX and also Shattered by Coki, which I realised is a bad bad tune - Coki's drums are underrated, at least on those oldish tunes. The whole night was fucking great as usual. Hold very tight and close your eyes @ Tom, Rachel, Lewis, Geiom, Dawntreader, Brackles and Mart etc.

While I'm here I may as well plug a few mixes that have been doing it for me in recent weeks. For deep house fans HERE's a Move D mix (right click and save). You should also check out the following:

And it don't stop

Two follow up posts here...

Firstly, that next Berkane Sol tune I posted about has been reviewed in The Wire by strength-of-ten-man-like-Joe-''Mixmag''-Muggs, along with Brackles' and Shortstuff's ''Broken Harp''/Geiom RMX, which is coming out on man-like-the-one-like-the-man-like-the-one-like-the-EFA's label Pollen.

Personally I'd have kept it snappy. Something along the lines of - ''Dog turds all round?'' But then, I don't write for The Wire. I write for the imaginary audience for this blog. They're not a discerning bunch - most of them are wearing their pants at two in the afternoon and think that Steve Reich ran a plastering business in 1930's Germany. But I still love them, almost as much as I love my imaginary girlfriend. There's something uniquely unintrusive about a fictitious being sitting on your face.

Ahem.

Also, those imaginary beings amongst you who are regular readers might remember me recently slobbering like a fidget house DJ in a Hackney Squat over ''Aqua5fresh'' by Zomby. Well, for once it seems that Kode 9 is taking tips from me (guess what I'm joking) as apparently it's coming out on Hyperdub in the near future - go to Zombo's myspace for a clip.

So there's that, which is better than anything else in the world, the new Burial EP, which will probably be better than almost anything else in the world, and a new Ikonika 12 to boot, which is also fucked...

I therefore conclude that Hyperdub beats are like the trenchcoat mafia of dubstep at the moment - A.D.D addled twitching weirdos gunning down the macho conformatistist meathead beats that have jovially posted the marginals against a towering lampost-stiff knob-shaft for the past year or so, and if they're looking for someone to write distasteful and morally abject press releases for them, I'd like to announce that I'm often free between writing pointless blog posts, except on days when I'm eating laughing cows slices whole from the fridge, snipping hair from the shaft of my penis with a pair of nail-scissors, or am just shambolically caned and watching Hollyoaks until my brain curdles.

Just one more hour then we're definitely leaving

This here's Bizmarc about to play Dutch Flowers at a mansion/squat party in Nottingham ages ago - why it it that at a squat party you'll always see a guy with a spot up his nose who lives in a speaker and eats potatoes that he squeezes out of tree trunks with his bare hands, and a pissed up maniac in a thrash metal t-shirt going apeshit to A Higher State of Consciousness because he's been hearing those high pitched noises in his head for the last five years ever since he went to the front for Dominocidal and got crushed up against the speaker for fifty minutes, and so really relates to that one tune, and yet you never see them anywhere else? I have no idea but I'm glad. Stillhol, I've been a bearded ketamine casualty at at least one afterparty and the looks people gave me were of both disgust and relief - disgust at the state of me, relief at the state of them. In one sense that night I was like the Jesus Christ of consumption for them: taking it on the chin for all moderate humanity. Also there was the beard and the questionable personal hygeine. So three senses really. And anyway, being over-fucked at an afterparty makes you officially indispensible to it's vibe. If you're lying on the floor with your eyes rolling back in your head and vomit smeared across your chin, you are basically as important as the sound system.

''RAGE AGAINST THE dying of the night...''

Anyway, Bizmarc has done a MIX* for the night he co-runs in Nottingham, Futureproof. Futureproof is alot. My fondest memory of it is either Brackles and Mart playing We Can Get Down right at the end of the last one, or of me being violently sick into a plastic bag at the bottom of a stairwell. In all seriousness though the night is one of the best in the UK in my unbiased and impartial opinion, and this mix is heavy too.

1. Pinch – E.Motiv (Planet Mu)
2. 2562 – Walkover (Tectonic)
3. Pole – Achterbahn [Shackleton Remix] (~Scape)
4. Peverelist – Roll With The Punches (Punch Drunk)
5. Pinch – Chamber Dub (Soul Jazz)
6. Geiom & Appleblim – Shreds (cdr)
7. Shut Up and Dance – Epileptic [Martyn’s No Strobe Mix] (SUAD)
8. 2562 – Movern (Tectonic)
9. Martyn – Vancouver (3024)
10. Monolake – Static (Monolake/Imbalance Computer Music)
11. T++ - Allied (White)
12. Ramadanman – Blimey (Hessle Audio)
13. 2562 – Enforcers (Tectonic)
14. Digital Mystikz – Neverland (DMZ)
15. Convextion – Solum Ferrum (Down Low Music)
16. Zomby – Strange Fruit (Ramp)
17. Zomby – Spliff Dub [Rustie Remix] (Hyperdub)
18. Rustie – Response (Stuffrecords)
19. Darkstar – Thugged Out 9 (cdr)

That 'Strange Fruit' tune... I used to think I wouldn't let Zomby sleep with my mum but after hearing that I'd perfume her cooch up with Calvin Klein obsession slathered over the tip of my tongue for him. Actually no - but it's sick.

BUFF... BEATS

Remember THIS post I made about a couple of tunes forthcoming on Geiom's label? Of course you do. You probably even remember where you were when you read it, just like Americans of all ages remember where they were when they helped shoot JFK from three hundred angles.

Anyhoo, HERE'S a great mix from the man himself, from Get Darker (big up Ashley). It reminds me of the mix Kamal did at the Soul Jazz Steppa's Delight night a month or so ago. I was messed up on pills* ranting to anyone who would listen (i.e. nobody) about Youngsta on Rinse in 2005 (incidentally, you should also download Kode + D1 off Rinse in 2005 too), and how nothing will ever be as good as Loefah in those days blah blah blah

And then he dropped Ruffage and proved me right. I mean people are still making good tunes but anything with this much bloody-minded conviction and no-frills power?

Anyway, here's the tracklist -

1. graveyard - a night with two moons - louis and bebe barron
2. reminissin' - geiom feat: marita - shackleton refix
3. salsa house - richie rich
4. the mood vibe - william rosario
5. what would we Do (remix) -DSK
6. frozen time - synchrojack
7. out there - friends of matthew
8. space + time - da real deal
9. losing marbles - trg + dub u
10. protecting hands - clouds - geiomix
11. ruffage - loefah
12. the branch is weak - shackleton - geiomix
13. feist - bionics
14. jah way - rsd
15. glazed - brackles
16. the funk - dj rekless
17. slavin' away - bass clef
18. robby arranges flowers, zaps monkey - louis and bebe barron

* earlier on that night I was violently puking up black stomach lining in the bogs at Dirty Canvas, just as One Man was playing -

That was the moment I had a profound epiphany - I am not a garage sort of person. I love it, but it doesn't love me. You're supposed to wear nice shirts, drink champagne and grind up against girls in tiny dresses to garage- you aren't supposed to vomit, cry and subsequently masturbate yourself into a physically and spiritually numb stupour as stomach acid runs in rivulets down your scarred throat and some bloke in pink-rimmed sunglasses bangs on the door angrily in-between sniffing. That's what hard house is for.
